Glowy Effect Study
I was watching the Tron 2 dvd, and it got me thinking about how it would be really cool to do a Tron-like effect in comics, but so far no one’s ever pulled it off. I played around with it for about a half hour and got this.
Of course it didn’t turn out the way I’d envisioned. I’ll keep trying though. I feel that a really cool glowing Tron-esque effect can be affomplished in comics by means of overprinting, combined with a Sin City-ish approach to rendering forms, and some well chosen gradients. Studying printed film stills from the first film might prove informative.
This is a drawing I did about a year ago. It’s not a Tron effect, but it’s the sort of thing I’d like to accomplish. Pastels and hypersaturated colors gradiating into each other, producing an op-art effect that is more of a biological phenomenon than a reading experience. This piece hasn’t been printed yet. I assume it’s going to lose a lot of its potency once it’s printed, with the colors losing the luminosity that they have on the screen.
Hey Tom,
I was inspired to re-color your commission based off that second drawing.
