Read this article, it’ll blow your mind:

Otto Binder, one of the guiding forces behind Captain Marvel and a lot of the cool stuff in Superman wrote an article that seems to have all the ingredients of the X-Men.

This was in the April issue of Wired so there’s a chance it might be an April Fool’s joke. If it’s real, this seems like a big find.

Update: via the Jack Kirby yahoo group, Kurt Busiek pointed out some old sci-fi pulps that seem to be the common sources for both the Binder article and the X-Men: ODD JOHN by Olaf Stapledon, SLAN by A.E. van Vogt, CHILDREN OF THE ATOM by Wilmar Shiras, and MUTANT by Henry Kuttner/ Lewis Padgett.
